You are probably saying to yourself what is kamut? Well, that is what my husband said to me. He also noted that it does not sound very appetizing, okay . . .maybe but kamut is just another hearty grain!
I paired this heart-healthy grain up with another heart smart favorite, steel cut oats!
I placed both grains in the crock-pot with some water and let them cook. By the way this month’s Recipe Redux’s is highlighting crock-pot recipes! I love my crock-pot and thought this is a different new way to use the crock-pot for breakfast!

Kamut (pronounced ka-moot) is thought to be a an ancient grain, however, I am finding mixed reviews saying it is a descent of an early Egyptian grain. Kamut is very similar to wheat but slightly sweeter and nuttier in taste. A one-cup serving of cooked kamut contains 10 grams of protein and 7.5 grams of dietary fiber plus significant amounts of selenium, manganese, magnesium and zinc.
The Whole Grain Council has an interesting article about a very small randomized crossover study done by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition that included periods where subjects ate a normal diet and also ate a diet rich in kamut grain products. The results did show a greater drop in cholesterol levels when the subjects followed the diet high in kamut. Check the full story at Health Study: Kamut Wheat vs. Modern Wheat.
I like kamut because it is fun new grain to try and love the chewier texture, yum!
After about 6 to 7 hours, the grains are cooked!
I topped it with some blueberries, raw agave nectar and some Homemade Applesauce in the Crock-Pot!
Crock-Pot Hot Cereal with Kamut and Steel Cut Oats
1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup kamut
3 1/2 cups water
This makes a large batch!
Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and place on HIGH for 6 to 7 hours. Add desired topping to hot cereal.
