I am just a little obsessed with any food that contains coffee, ahh . . . just the thinking about coffee sends my brain into serenity mode. I would love to have a caramel frappe every day from any restaurant but I don’t think that would be good for A) my butt or B) my wallet. Those little drinks sure do pack on the calories and easily contain well over 500 calories, depending on the size. So, like I do with any recipe, why not lower the calories and add some nutritional benefits!
First off, coffee in moderation, is actually good-for-you! It is high in antioxidants and recent studies have been finding that coffee can help protect against Parkinson’s Disease, type 2 diabetes and even some cancers. Although I have seen research that unfiltered coffee can increase cholesterol levels, so again, like any food – just keep in moderate consumption.
Let me fill you in on my little secrets to making this drink. There is a method to the madness because sometimes that darn protein powder wants to clump up, yuck! I haven’t tried making this with other protein powders just because I am so in love with this flavor and product. After tasting so many protein powders, I just cannot choke down some powders. Some are chalky, clumpy and have a that horrible “protein” aftertaste. So find one that you enjoy! I get this powder at my Hy-Vee HealthMarket! I really think it is one of the best in the taste category and also best bang for your buck. I can get a 35 pound bag (10% off sack sale day) for about $36. This protein powder contains 22 grams of protein plus it is sweetened with stevia!
Easy as pie . . . only 2 ingredients! Ok, maybe 3 if you count ice.
Here we go . . .
I use my Magic Bullet® but you can use your super blender, too.
Add about 1 tablespoon (or about 1 packet) of instant coffee. If you don’t like a strong coffee taste then go a 1/2 to 3/4 tablespoon and mix with about 2 tablespoons of warm tap water. Swirl your cup to mix coffee.
Add 1 scoop of protein powder and blend well. You may have to shake it a bit to make sure there are no yucky clumps.
Add about 1 cup of ice or a half cup ice Magic-Bullet-style.
It magically turns into some yummy goodness, soooo good!
