I swear my salads never rate up against any restaurant salad – probably because mine do not have as many calories as the latest and greatest new salad. But I have found a couple of tricks to make your salad stand out!
Must haves to make a 5 star salad:
1) Just a little bit of cheese – my favorite feta cheese, every salad needs feta in my book
I add just a tablespoon and it sure goes a long way – that is all it needs!
2) Crunch factor – whether you make your own homemade croutons or roast your favorite nuts, it sure does give a salad some great texture. My favorites are roasted walnuts, pistachios or even chipotle seasoned sunflower seeds!
3) Go for a unique veggies! – Try something new in your salad. I always try to have something just a little bit different such as red bell pepper, red onion or jicama.
4) Dynamic dressings – if you don’t have the right dressing it can totally bring down the entire salad. Try making a homemade dressing with 1 tablespoon garlic infused olive, 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar, 2 teaspoon spicy mustard and 2 teaspoon raw agave nectar – WOW! Or you can also try some spritzers to save some calories. Sometime I will add both nuts and cheese and save some calories on my dressing by using a spritzer. Here is a super low-calorie spritzer that I just love! Gourmet Mist – they sure are hard to find, I think they have actually been discontinued at my supermarket so I guess when I run out I may have to order online. Here is the one that I have tried – Balsamic Vinegar + Pomegranate Mister. This product contains no added sugars, salts – just aged balsamic vinegar with some pomegranate. Add a couple of sprays of this dressing plus some feta cheese, walnuts, chicken and fresh spinach and you have a top notch salad! Delish!
