It is high time for apple season!  A great time to go to the grocery store and pick from numerous varieties of apples. 

Apples are loaded with good nutrition and probably one of the best go-to snacks you can take on-the-go.  One medium apple has about five grams of fiber which is an excellent source.

The skin of apples is also loaded with cancer-fighting antioxidants including quercetin which may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease as well as lung and prostate cancers.    If you peel an apple you lose almost half the fiber and antioxidants than a naked apple.  Red Delicious, Granny Smith, and Gala all rank in the top 20 on the USDA’s list of foods highest in antioxidants per serving size (80 calories). 

A study from Cornell University found that liver cancer cells treated with 50 mg of apple extract decreased cancer cell growth by 57%.  Cornell University

Apples are rich in pectin which is a soluble fiber that acts like a sponge in your arteries to help soak up the LDL (lousy) cholesterol, therefore lowering cholesterol.  Researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that apples act as antioxidants against the damaging portion of cholesterol in the blood stream.
